12. A Question Of Respect

IT WAS A DREAM.

Sometimes you can tell you’re dreaming and sometimes you can’t. I don’t know at what point I realised it was a dream (probably when a herd of horses ran through my gran’s front room) but it was obvious by the end.

I was in my old classroom, back in school, and Mr Ross was attempting to drum physics into us. It wasn’t going well and we were all totally fucked off. It was about five minutes into the lesson when I realised that I was in my thirties and didn’t need to put up with this shit anymore. I was standing up to walk out when Mr Ross turned around and roared at me to get back in my seat. I told him to fuck off, I was going home and everyone in the classroom gasped and asked each other if you could do that. Mr Ross shouted at me again and I turned and ran for the door. I couldn’t understand why I’d put up with this sort of shit for so long. And being completely straight here, I couldn’t understand why I’d decided to come back to school when I’d made a pretty good living so far from robbing banks, but then that’s dreams for you. When I got to the door, Mr Ross was already there, blocking my exit. I tried to go around him but he grabbed my arm. I punched him in the face over and over again but it had absolutely no effect on him, like he wasn’t even feeling it. I pulled out my gun and tried to shoot him, but the bullets merely rolled out of the barrel and dropped to the floor. I even tried flicking the gun as I fired to get more force behind the slugs but they just popped out harmlessly. My gran then asked if me and my friend wanted a cup of tea. I tried to tell her that he was no friend of mine but suddenly we were all too busy trying to stop the horses from stampeding. I finally slowed mine down and even got it to do a Lone Ranger wheelie but when it came down it knocked over my gran’s favourite lamp which somehow led to my old man being electrocuted in the bath upstairs. We all rushed upstairs and gathered around the old fella, who was shivering and sobbing, and tried to comfort him but the damage was done. The doctor told my mum to hold him still while he gave him an injection to put him down. My dad was crying and saying he was scared and didn’t want to be put down but the doctor was saying that he had no choice after I’d electrocuted him (they kept emphasising this point). “But I don’t want to die, I feel okay,” he was blubbing, and then my mum joined in and told him that they had to and that it was for the best after I’d electrocuted him.
